How to Lobby

  • Create an Environment of Trust
Your legislator will be more receptive to your message if you create an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness.
  • Become an Expert
You are there to educate your legislator. Have the information with you to answer anticipated questions.
  • Define the Issues
Explain the issue in a way that your legislator can relate to.
  • Focus on the Facts
    Stay logical and unemotional.
  • Make One Point at a Time
Talk about one point at a time. It’s good to focus on 3 - 4 taking points that you really feel strongly about and limit yourself to those.
  • Follow-up with Requested Information
Mail, e-mail or hand-deliver additional facts, figures or correspondence requested by your legislator.
  • Fill Out a Lobby Report
Please report back to PPNF the substance of your visit with your legislator. The report will be placed in your legislator’s file.
