Take Political Action
On April 18, 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court gutted 30 years of protections for women’s health previously safeguarded
by Roe v. Wade. In Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood, the court upheld the federal abortion ban passed by Congress
and signed by President Bush in 2003, which criminalizes abortion procedures that doctors say are safe and often
the best to protect women’s health. For the first time, the Supreme Court told women that when their health is at
risk during pregnancy, deciding what to do is not longer up to them and their doctors - now politicians will make
their medical decisions for them.
The anti-choice movement continues its push against reproductive health and rights on many other fronts, seeking
earlier, more stringent, and broader restrictions on abortion, birth control, pregnant women, and abortion
providers. Pharmacies across the country continue to deny access to emergency contraception. Many abstinence-only
sex programs provide young adults with misleading and inaccurate information about abortion and birth control.
And now the Supreme Court’s decision has opened the floodgates to state and federal attempts to further limit
access to reproductive health care. We won’t let them get away with it.
