Routine Gynecological Care

A complete gynecological exam includes a breast and pelvic exam, as well as a Pap test (to screen for cervical cancer). Screening for sexually transmitted infections, urinary tract and vaginal infections is available. Menopausal services are available as well.

Birth Control / Contraceptive Services

PPNF currently offers a wide variety of birth control options: Birth control pills, Depo Provera (3 month injection), NuvaRing (vaginal ring) and Ortho Evra patch. We do fittings for diaphragms and Today Sponge. We insert and remove IUDs, both Mirena (hormonal) and non-hormonal (ParaGard).

For more information about the different types of contraceptives, please visit Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. at www.plannedparenthood.org

Consultation Visit

Women without significant medical problems may be eligible for hormonal contraception (pills, patches, Depo shots and Nuva Ring) for a 6 month period, with optional or delayed physical exam. Your blood pressure is taken and your medical history is reviewed to make sure it is safe for you to take hormonal contraception. Annual gynecological exams are recommended for all women, but we realize sometimes that is not possible.

Emergency Contraception (EC)

Emergency contraception (formerly known as "the morning after pill") is designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. This is not the same as medical abortion or the "abortion pill". EC should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. It is most effective if taken within 72 hours. It is somewhat effective up to 120 hours.

Pregnancy Testing and Options Counseling

Highly sensitive pregnancy tests are offered on a walk-in basis. Counseling and referrals are provided for all options (pregnancy prevention, prenatal care, adoption and abortion).

Sexually Transmitted Infections

PPNF provides screening or testing for both men and women for many STIs including: chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, herpes, genital warts and syphilis. Anonymous HIV testing and counseling is provided. Testing is available by blood or oral fluid. Gonorrhea and chlamydia testing can be done on a urine specimen. Most STIs can be treated on-site. Referrals are given for treatment of syphilis and HIV.

For more information about STIs, please visit Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. at www.plannedparenthood.org

Abortion Services

PPNF offers surgical abortions under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation, from 7 to 13.6 weeks. Medication abortion – formerly known as RU-486 is available up to 7 weeks of pregnancy.

For women under 18

In Florida, women under 18 are required to have the consent of one parent or legal guardian to have an abortion. If this is not possible, the state provides an alternative called "judicial bypass" which means you go to court to have a judge determine that you are mature enough to make this decision without a parent’s consent. For more information, please contact PPNF at (904) 399-2800.

Anonymous HIV Testing & Counseling

PPNF provides anonymous HIV testing and counseling for both men and women including, OraSure (oral fluid test), and OraQuick (blood) advance rapid. OraSure (oral swab) results may take up to three weeks and is free. OraQuick (blood) results in 20 minutes for $30.00!

Colposcopy and Cryotherapy

PPNF offers cervical cancer screening and treatment services for abnormal Pap tests as follows:

Colposcopy is a procedure most often performed to further evaluate an abnormal Pap test. The colposcope magnifies the cervix so that microscopic abnormalities can be seen and samples of tissue can be taken directly from those areas for analysis. Colposcopy allows more accurate evaluation of cancerous and pre-cancerous cellular changes.

Cryotherapy is a freezing procedure that destroys abnormal cells. In about six or eight weeks, healthy cells will replace those that were frozen and destroyed.
